Using survey data collected before and after the outbreak of hybrid warfare in eastern Ukraine in 2014, we estimate the effect of proximity to conflict on self-reported well-being and economic security — evidence that predates, and helps contextualise, the much larger shock of the 2022 full-scale invasion.
