China’s trade over 2021–2023 shows a clear geopolitical fingerprint: exports peaked at $3.54 trillion in 2022 before falling 3.46% in 2023, while imports fell more sharply, down 5.24% — a pattern read here as a reorientation of trade strategy rather than simple cyclical weakness. Traditional partners, the US and Taiwan among them, saw significant declines, while trade with Russia and Brazil grew substantially, tracking the realignments driven by the war in Ukraine, Middle East conflict, and shifting political alliances more broadly.
